Pleasant Dreams

There is nothing like a warm blue and orange sunset to take the cares of the day away.

Colorado National Monument

Northwest of Delta an hour or so sits a well hidden gem, known as Colorado National Monument. The park contains one road that follows the canyon rim, and provides some spectacular vistas. If you are in the area, it is well worth a visit.

Special Request: If you are a regular follower of DDP, I have a request of you. Please take a look at yesterdays post, and the comment made by “Anonymous”. My initial thought was that Anonymous felt I was insulting the people of Delta, but upon rereading the comment, they are actually saying I am insulting people who buy truly “nice” homes. Somehow I don’t get the feeling that the people in all the “nice” places Anonymous mentions would feel all that offended by my post, but I am curious what you think, would you consider any of my posts offensive to some people? Please leave any related comments on yesterdays post. I appreciate your thoughts.

New Development

The development of new homes is sometimes done in a tacky way, but this new development in Delta has a certain amount of class. Nice houses, larger acreage, and great views.

Home Bound

The drive into Delta from the north, especially at sunset, is simply a joy.

The Other Side of The Sign

Now the people leaving the cherry stand could be somewhat confused, but if they came back in the opposite direction, later in the season, they would have something else to stop for, as this sign is good for two seasons!

Cherries

As I think I have mentioned before, Delta is in a sort of banana belt, and it is a very good place to grow fruit. Well, the fruit for this time of the year is cherries (not sure when banana season is), and one enterprising family has put up a stand in driveway dedicated to this delicacy of early summer. It is rather difficult to miss the sign, and the fruit is worth the stop.

Maybe Today

Another day begins for this classic, and it could be thinking, “Maybe today will be the day they take me out for another ride……” What do you think?

Missing Forest

Here is a case where you really can’t “see the forest for the trees”.

Under the Stars

Summer is here, and the Drive In is open! Recently, we got together with some 25-30 friends for a couple of movies, and waiting for the movie to start is half the fun.. The vehicles were lined up, back seats removed where possible, food was passed all around the group, and a warm evening under the stars brought a good end to the week.

Looking Back

A number of years ago, I use to do a lot of caving, and I recall walking through one passage, and our guide asked us to turn around. He then asked if we had ever been in that passage before. It looked completely different, and was unrecognizable! The point was look behind you every so often so that when you are going out of the cave, you will recognize the route. I thought about that yesterday as I was driving into Delta. The view from the mirror did not look anything like what I had just driven through!

Stealth Cows

Ok, here is the plan. You all stay low, I said stay low Elsie, and we head north, no wait, south, and we make a run for the border and freedom! Wait, I think we have been spotted…No, I have not figured out what to do about that fence…....

New Corn

Another year of promise. Perhaps this year, the rains will be kind, the temperatures mild, and the corn high. Only time will tell. In any case, a tough way to make a living.

How the Dobies were formed?

At the north end of Tongue Creek sits the Delta County landfill. Zoom in on the picture, and then ask yourself, is Delta county simply using the Dobies as a convenient way to cover up their trash, or perhaps, just perhaps, is it the other way around, and the Dobies were really formed this way… Delta has been around for a while…..We may never know!

That Sinking Feeling

Not sure if the mud or grass will get this place first!

Council Tree

The sign Reads:

This cottonwood tree has been designated a Colorado landmark by the Capt. John Gunnison chapter D.A.R 1437 and dates back to around 1802. A Ute Indian Trail from the Uncompahgre Plateau to Grand Mesa once passed nearby.

This tree was dedicated in memory of Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta who strove to promote peace between the Utes and the white man. Chief Ouray met with white settlers under this tree. Chipeta was said to have been the only Ute Indian woman ever permitted to sit in council meetings. Ouray died Aug 4, 1880.

Delta County Historical Society 3/87

To get a feeling as to how big this thing is, compare it to the tire tracks to the right of the tree.

Delta Eye

Maybe if British Airways ever starts serving Delta, we could get a better Ferris wheel!

At least the view from the air was good!

Midway

Once a year the carnival comes to town to charge you $4 for a short time on a ride that lives mainly in a semi truck. The midway gives you the chance to spend $5 throwing 3 darts in an attempt to win a stuffed animal. Suddenly $4 for a Coke in London seems like a deal! The older kids paid or borrowed their own way to this once a year event. $25 got them Unlimited Rides! When home, I asked if they would rather have the $25 in their pocket, and to a kid, they said YES! Cheap lessons :)

Half-Off Sale

The housing market is somewhat slow, so they have resorted to half off sales……..

Oops

My first thought upon seeing this scene in Paris was that an accident had occurred, but I soon discovered that no, the car was designed this way………I will will keep my new car, thanks :)

I wonder if the wheels turn sideways........

Thanks for indulging me on my side trip. Tomorrow, back to our regularely scheduled city!

American Cemetery

I was completely amazed and overwhelmed at how respectful and well done the American Cemetery was at Normandy. The land was gifted by France to America, and is considered American soil. A truly class act on the part of the French.

Where the river meets the sea

This is another Greenland shot, and my best guess is that is the end result of the ice flows the come out from the rivers.

Greenland

This week I am in Virginia on business, and plan to cheat a little. I took over 500 pictures while in Europe, and am going to show you some of the off beat ones I like. This one was taken from the plane over Greenland on the return trip. I was not really expecting to see Greenland, so this was a treat!

Confusion

Well, the Delta Vision program High School Graduation went off well, but these graduates seem somewhat confused with that thing hanging off their hats….Zoom in to check out the individual expressions.

Happy Birthday Mom

The first year after a loved one dies is filled with milestones, and today is another one of those for us as Mom would have been 73 today. We had the opportunity Friday night to celebrate in good fashion as we participated in the American Cancer Society “Walk for Life”. Many people in town formed groups to raise money, and then walked through the night to honor the memory of those who lost the fight and those who are in the middle of the fight, to raise awareness, and to raise funds for research. Over $52,000 was raised at the Delta event.

The track was lined with over 500 luminaries, which allowed personal expression. I suspect one day I will hear about the spelling mistake on one of ours, but I know she understands the message is from the heart :) Happy Birthday Mom!

As long as its for business reasons

As you drive down main street in Delta, there are plenty of places to buy a used car. At first glance, from a far, this place looks like one. Cars line the street, a sign indicates used cars for sale, etc. There is however a large yellow sign on the door, and upon closer inspection, it is really unclear what this lot is really for. I have never posted a permanent sign when going out of town on business……..

New Rides

Well, with the Saturn Ion Quad nothing but history, it was time to find a replacement car. Dad wanted a convertible, but it also had to be able to be towed on all four wheels behind the motorhome. Hardtop Saturns had always been the choice for towing....until he saw a Pontiac G6 with convertible hardtop, and it can be towed on all four wheels.......But do I let Tim use it as he had the Quad.......Tim got a Dodge Dynasty, built in the same year he was born. His payments start today :)
